The Joy of Reading Books Versus Screens in a Digital World

I love the comforting feel of a physical book in my hands. Even though this post is being read on a screen, I want to share why reading from a book is better for your eyes and overall experience. As someone who loves books deeply, I’ve noticed clear differences that make traditional reading a unique pleasure.

As our Grandma said, "There is nothing like the magic inside the pages of a book."

Why Reading from a Book Feels Different

When I pick up a book, I immediately feel a connection that screens can’t replicate. The texture of the pages, the smell of the paper, and even the weight of the book create a sensory experience that can't be replaced. This physical interaction helps me focus better and remember the story.

Screens, on the other hand, often come with distractions like notifications or the temptation to switch apps. The blue light emitted by screens strains my eyes after a while. This is why reading from a book is better for your eyes; the natural light reflection on paper is gentler, reducing eye fatigue and headaches.

Eye strain is a common complaint among people who spend hours reading on digital devices. Research shows that prolonged exposure to screen light can cause dryness, irritation, and blurred vision. Books don’t emit light; they reflect ambient light, which is easier on the eyes.

Enjoying More Books

If you want to reduce screen time but still enjoy your favorite stories, here are some tips I’ve found useful:

  • Choose a well-lit, comfortable spot for reading.

  • Use bookmarks to track your progress instead of scrolling.

  • Take breaks every 30 minutes to rest your eyes.

  • Explore different genres to keep your reading exciting.

  • Join a local book club or library to discover new titles and connect with fellow readers.

  • Check out local bookstores (such as The Sandusky Book Bar or Graceful Pages)

Why I Keep Coming Back to Books

Despite living in a digital age, I keep returning to physical books because they offer a break from screens and a chance to slow down. The tactile nature of books encourages me to savor each page. Plus, I find it easier to disconnect from the constant buzz of technology when I’m immersed in a printed story.

When our Grandma was losing her vision, we ensured she could still hear books. However, she always said she missed holding them and actually seeing the words on the page. She missed the smell of books and her various bookmarks she would use to hold her spot. These experiences were part of who she was and to see her lose that was very sad. Grandma never once complained when she eventually couldn't read at all, but the sadness she felt in her heart was obvious, and yes, she could hear the books outloud, but to her it was more about the physical book. I will always remember her love of books and how she never wanted anyone else to go through that experience.

Pick up a book today and remember what it was like to be a child looking at the pages with wonder and excitement. Feel the pages and take yourself back to a time where everything wasn't so fast-paced. Take the time to read and absorb the words into your heart. Like Grandma, you too will find the magic she felt when she held a book in her hands.
